GST calculator

Add GST to a figure or pull it back out of one, at any of the standard rates. Built for sellers, so it also splits the tax the way it appears on an invoice and shows the taxable value hiding behind a marketplace listing price.

The amount

Is that figure with GST or without?

A marketplace listing price is almost always GST inclusive. A supplier quote often is not, so check before you assume.

GST rate
Where is the buyer?

Same state splits the tax into CGST and SGST. Different state is a single IGST line. The total is identical either way.

₹152.54

GST at 18%

₹847.46

Taxable value, before GST

₹1,000.00

Total the buyer pays

How it appears on the invoice

  • CGST at 9.00%₹76.27
  • SGST at 9.00%₹76.27
  • Invoice total₹1,000.00
Why this matters for sellers. The price on your listing is GST inclusive, so the tax comes out before anything else. Working out a margin on the listing price rather than on the taxable value is one of the quickest ways to convince yourself a product is profitable when it is not.

The same amount at every rate

  • 0%₹1,000.00 + ₹0.00 = ₹1,000.00
  • 5%₹952.38 + ₹47.62 = ₹1,000.00
  • 12%₹892.86 + ₹107.14 = ₹1,000.00
  • 18%₹847.46 + ₹152.54 = ₹1,000.00
  • 28%₹781.25 + ₹218.75 = ₹1,000.00

How this works

  • Removing GST divides the figure by one plus the rate. Subtracting eighteen percent from a GST inclusive amount is not the same thing and gives you the wrong answer.
  • A sale inside your own state splits into CGST and SGST at half the rate each. A sale to another state is a single IGST line at the full rate. The total is the same either way.
  • Marketplace listing prices are GST inclusive, so the taxable value is always lower than the price on the page.
  • The table at the bottom runs the same amount through every standard rate, which is useful when you are still working out which slab a product falls into.

Questions sellers ask

How do I remove GST from a price?

Divide by one plus the rate as a decimal. For eighteen percent, divide by 1.18. Subtracting eighteen percent instead is a common mistake and leaves you short, because the eighteen percent was calculated on the smaller taxable value, not on the final price.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

They are the same tax split differently depending on where the buyer is. Within your state it splits in half between the centre and the state as CGST and SGST. Across state lines it is one IGST line at the full rate. Your buyer pays the same amount either way.

Which GST rate applies to my product?

It depends on the HSN code, not on the category name a marketplace uses. Most apparel under a thousand rupees is five percent and above that twelve, many household goods are eighteen, and a small set of items sits at twenty eight. Check the HSN for your exact product rather than guessing from the shelf it sits on.

Does GST come out of my margin?

The GST you collect from the buyer is not yours and passes through to the government, so it does not reduce your margin directly. What does affect you is calculating margin on the listing price instead of on the taxable value, which makes a product look better than it is by the whole rate.

What about GST on marketplace fees?

That is separate and it is a real cost. Marketplaces charge eighteen percent GST on the commission, closing fee and shipping they bill you. You can claim it as input credit if you are registered, but it does sit in your settlement in the meantime. The profit calculators on this site account for it.

Get your catalogue and marketplace paperwork sorted

Wrong HSN codes, mismatched GST rates and messy SKU structures are the sort of thing that sits quietly for months and then blocks a shipment or holds up a settlement. We set the catalogue up properly once and keep it clean as it grows.
